Karuna Institute is a Charitable Nonprofit formed in 2002 by Law Offices of Michael F. Roe, PC. Karuna Institute is the vehicle for charitable and educational projects sponsored by the Firm as part of its mission to “do well for its clients and do charitable good for others.”
Karuna Institute sponsors events in contemplative science, and has founded Asiana University, an online academic center that connects students in the contemplative sciences with strong and cost effective Pastoral Care and Clinical Pastoral Education academic programs in Asia and around the world. All revenues from Asiana University support the charitable projects of Karuna Institute.
Karuna Institute has also helped with small, but important projects, such as supplying funds to a former Thai Monk as he supports Shan State (Burma) refugee children in northern Thailand with food, clothing, and educational needs.
The Departing Warriors Project is inspired by the need for specially trained Hospice Volunteers to accompany Veterans facing their final deployment. Many of these Vets await the final stages of their lives alone. Having served this country with honor and distinction, The Departing Warriors Project seeks to serve these men and women facing their final mission…without having to face the journey alone. Bearing Witness to their Final Deployment ® Bearing witness means listening deeply. Listening without judging. Listening to become one with another. Giving another human being absolute and total recognition. Bearing witness is not mere observation or simple presence…it is wise, compassionate, mindful action.
Wai Khru Foundation is a charitable project initiated to provide financial and other support to Phra Khru Bah, Temple of the Golden Horse who has created a haven for young boys, many of whom are orphaned or abandoned. Michael Roe, an attorney and ABC Certified MMA Judge, established the Karuna Institute in 1996, a nonprofit established by his family law firm to focus on children’s charitable causes. In 2010, Michael and his son traveled to Thailand to meet Khru Bah, and thereafter a commitment was made to assist the Golden Horse Temple and its efforts to shelter and educate orphaned children of the region. It is hoped that through revenues from the law practice, and through fundraising in the MMA community, that additional funds can be raised to support the Golden Horse Temple in Thailand. All funds raised through Wai Khru go directly to the temple; no funds are used for foundation admin or other costs.

Phra Khru Bah Neua Chai Kositto
Abbot Phra Khru Bah Neua Chai Kositto is a former soldier and Thai boxing (Muay Thai) champion. Today this transformed man has found inner peace and a new vocation as a Buddhist monk. Devoted, disciplined and extremely resilient, Khru Bah has survived many physical attacks from gangs running drugs or illegal gambling operations.
Operating on a special mandate from the Supreme Patriarch, the Abbot’s focus lies on serving the most marginalized of the poor, the hilltribe children, in Thailand’s remote northern province of Chiang Rai.
In the serene Wat Maa Tong (Temple of the Golden Horse) he has created a haven for these young boys, many of whom are orphaned or abandoned.
